Before any student can apply for his or her practical driving test, he/she must have undertaken and passed the Theory and HP Tests. The Theory Examination consists of 50 multiple answer questions with the current pass rate of 43 correct answers. The Hazard Perception test is taken at the same time and venue. This particular part of the qualification is relatively new and consists of 14 video clips where students have to identify 15 hazards. For each hazard identified correctly 5 marks are awarded, The pass mark for this part of the test is 44.
Practical Driving Test
The Practical Driving Test is approximately 40 minutes in length and includes all types of road conditions with the exception of the Motorway.
Firstly the examiner will conduct a simple eye sight test asking students to read a vehicle number plate at 20 metres.
Next he/she will conduct the "show me tell me questions", which involves basic car maintenance such as how to check levels of oil and water etc. .
The final part of the test is the Practical Drive. This involves town work, open road work, dual carriageways and manoeurveing. As part of the manoeuvres the student will be asked to attempt 2 of the set tests, which include:
Reverse Park
Turn in the Road
Reverse around a left Corner
Only when the student has passed all of these competencies will he/she be issued with their pass certificate to drive motor vehicles in the class they have just undertaken.
